Join Kenney’s/McCabe Beach Civic Association, Group for the East End and the Town of Southold for a cleanup at Great Pond in Southold. Meet at Lake Court and we’ll head to the areas that need continued cutting! Volunteers will help remove phragmites, an invasive species also known as common reed, to help restore this critical habitat and encourage native plant regrowth.
If you haven't yet joined a Great Pond phragmites cutting event, why not come out and participate in this pre-spring session? Sure, it might be chilly -- there might even be snow on the ground! But we'll make some progress together to encourage native plant regrowth and create healthy habitat for shorebirds and other pond wildlife.
WHAT: Great Pond Cleanup
WHEN: Saturday, March 14th 10 AM - 1 PM, raindate Sunday, March 15th
WHERE: Meet at Lake Court, off Lake Drive, Southold
Dress warmly! Tools will be available; you’re encouraged to bring your own if you have them. Bring work gloves, and plenty of water.
This habitat restoration project is made possible by funding awarded to the Town of Southold by a Long Island Sound Futures Fund, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation grant.
